Bill McKibben’s 350.org movement, a grassroots organization that promotes cutting carbon dioxide emissions to 1988 levels of 350 parts per million, is promoting a global day of action on environmental issues this Sunday, October 10th.
In a follow-up to the group’s wildly successful “day of political action” on Saturday, October 24th, 2009, this year’s event is a massive “global work party,” with thousands of individual events schedule the world over.
Why 10/10/10? A global grassroots campaign founded by Franny Armstrong, director of Age of Stupid, is promoting a 10% reduction in carbon emissions in 2010. McKibben’s organization has joined the 10:10 movement in promotion of this day of work.
A quick scan of the group’s database shows over 30 events close to Harvard, a number of which are in Cambridge. If there isn’t an event that appeals to you, the site has a package of materials that can be used to launch your own.
Harvard’s Environmental Action Committee is canvasing in Porter Square on the 10th, exchanging incandescent light bulbs for energy efficient CFLs and asking residents to sign a climate pledge. The group is leaving Harvard around 12:30 on Sunday afternoon. After the canvassing, the group is going to hit up Greenpeace’s rally at the Massachusetts State House in Boston at 3:30.
This is going to be a huge global event, and there are so many ways to take part. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon just endorsed the day, and over 6846 events are scheduled.
