The Paper of Record Becomes a Parody of Itself

The New York Times often caters to the upscale tastes of its (quickly dwindling) readership: the Style section, the theater reviews, the wedding announcements. And that’s all well and good. But then, there are articles like this one. You see, apparently half a million dollars doesn’t get you very far in the Big Apple. Well, it’s not that it couldn’t get you very far, it’s just that it won’t get certain criminally malfeasant bankers very far, since they’re used to making several times that amount.

Oh, how we weep for them.

You know, I’ve been pretty lucky. I went to a very nice private high school, and am currently attending a very nice private college. I am a poster-child for upper-middle class striving. But striving is one thing; entitlement is another. These people forfeited their entitlement to the luxuries of modern America when they treated our economy like an abstract game, a game which they always won and everybody else always lost. And now the Times wants us to lament the fact that they might have to take New Jersey Transit to work. Spare me.
