Introducing “The Style Issue”

From the proliferation of generative artificial intelligence to the Golden Globes to the gates of our very own red-brick campus, the creative means by which we express who we are and what we value are central. For a clear-cut example of aesthetics in action in our politics, we need look no further than this summer’s deluge of “brat” and “coconut” memes about Vice President Kamala Harris, egged on by an entirely new kind of rapid-response engagement strategy.

Longstanding institutions of the magazine industry, Style Issues have long sought to capture aesthetic zeitgeists—the fashion, design, and artistic moods that permeate each moment. What would it mean, though, for a political publication like the HPR to take up style, aesthetics, and the like as its primary subject? This is precisely the question that senior staff writer Chinyere Obasi ’24 asked when he pitched “The Style Issue” for the HPR’s musing.
