I’m completely unsurprised to note that as of today, the House GOP leadership has declared that they’re going to begin whipping up votes against the stimulus. They ran up against the wall of what they could extract in concessions from Obama, and so now they need to do their best to kill it.  They’re judging (correctly, I think) that they won’t be seen as obstructing something that’s really necessary for the country, since the economic principles involved are way above the heads of most voters. And Congressmen, for that matter.*  They just need to do everything in their power to prevent Obama from passing a popular and successful stimulus package  While they don’t know if it’ll be either, they can’t take the chance.

As an aside, the Republican Party’s answer to every economic question, regardless of the circumstances, is the same: cut taxes. While voters do hate taxes, I have to believe this will start to lose traction soon, if it hasn’t already.

*: And almost everyone else.  I certainly lack the ability to crunch the numbers myself.
