A Nation at 250: Reflections on America’s Past, Present, and Future

The Harvard Political Review is excited to announce this special initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. As a publication dedicated to elevating the voices of young journalists in today’s political discourse, this occasion serves as an opportunity for our contributors to offer their reflections on where the nation stands at its semiquincentennial.

Ever since the HPR’s first issue was published in the politically tumultuous spring of 1969, we have asked “quo vadimus?” — where are we going? And at this critical juncture in America’s history, when our increasingly polarized news feeds are inundated with stories of conflict, cultural discord, and core institutions in limbo, the HPR now looks both forward and backward, asking — where have we been as a nation, and where are we going? Recognizing that the complex story of America is best told in all its dimensions and from as many vantage points as possible, this collection features one article from each of our six sections: Culture, Interviews, Local, Science and Technology, U.S., and World.

While each author reflects on America’s 250th anniversary through a different lens, their goal is the same: to take part in unraveling the narrative of the United States, diagnosing the inflection point at which we stand, and positing a preface for the next chapter in our nation’s history. The project of vitalizing civic engagement in pursuit of a more perfect union begins with embracing each of our roles in the national discourse. In that spirit, we would like to thank each of our writers for planting seeds of dialogue through their reflections.

We also thank Johnny Perkins for creating the graphic designs for this initiative as well as Isabelle Agarwal, Melanie Goldberg, Dylan Morris, Nate Iyer, Ella Ricketts, and Caitlin Saxinger for editing the pieces.
